Abstrakt     Cryptogenic stroke represents significant proportions of all strokes in young adults. From recent studies is not clear whether migraine with aura (MA) relates to patent foramen ovale (PFO) in cryptogenic stroke. Thus, we studied frequency as well as association MA with PFO in patients with cryptogenic stroke. Furthermore, we investigated relationship between some risk factors for cerebrovascular diseases and MA. We analyzed results of examinations done with transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) in the years 2006 and 2007 in 67 patients aged 42+-6,9 years. We monitored arterial velocity with TCD in both middle cerebral arteries. We tried to detect microemboluses after applying contrast during Valsalva maneuver. Data were analyzed with statistic software SPSS. Patent foramen ovale was found in 30 (44,8%) patients. MA was revealed in 15 (22,4%) patients. In subgroup of MA patients we did not find significant proportions patients with PFO regardingwithout PFO (p=0,389). The relationship between MA and PFO did not appear to be significant (p=0,307). We found significant higher proportion patients without arterial hypertension (AH) with respect to with AH in subgroup of MA patients (p<0,001). Proportion of cigarette smokers was significantly higher regarding nonsmokers in MA subgroup (p=0,004). The analysis showed significant relationship between cigarette smoking and MA (p=0,001) with odds ration of 9,16 (95%CI 2,46-34,09). We concluded that the proportion of MA patients in patients with cryptogenic stroke is low. It seems that MA is not related to PFO although could be related to cigarette smoking.
