Abstrakt     Clostridium difficile is a causative agent of antibiotic associated intestinal infections and is currently one of the most important nosocomial pathogens. Although bacteria can produce three different toxins, only two are the main factors virulence of: toxin A (enterotoxin) and toxin B (cytotoxin). Laboratory diagnosis is mostly based on the detection of one or both toxins in the feces. The incidence of C. difficile infections as well as disease severity are increasing worldwide. The unresponsivenes to metronidazole treatment is more common nowadays and the disease is increasingly observed in populations previously at low risk. Additionally, C. difficile is an emerging pathogen in animals, as well.
