Abstrakt | Extraintestinal complications caused by intestinal pathogens are possible, but they are rare. Extraintestinal infections develop in persons with bacteriaemia caused by Salmonella, Campylobacter and Yersinia, especially in older and immunosuppressed patients. Infections with nontyphoid salmonella may frequently produce arteritis or endocarditis. Hemolytic-uremic syndrome is a clinical syndrome characterized by progressive renal failure associated with hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia caused by Shiga-like toxin produced by enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli. An amebic liver abscess is the most serious complication associated with high mortality rate and it can spread from the liver to other organ systems. Reactive arthritis is aseptic arthritis that follows infection. | |
