Abstrakt     The protozoic parasite Cryptosporidium is a pathogen that infects humans and animals. It causes cryptosporidiosis, a well-known disease of medical and veterinary importance. The development of molecular biology-based techniques has provided an insight into the taxonomy and epidemiology of this parasite. In addition to the fourteen known species of Cryptosporidium, over thirty Cryptosporidium genotypes have been described. Thus far, seven species and two genotypes have been identified in humans. Molecular characterisation of Cryptosporidium parasites that infect humans in a certain area most frequently enables inferences about the sources of infection and transmission routes of cryptosporidiosis in this area and introduction appropriate intervention measures to prevent the infection.
