Abstrakt     Three methods were evaluated for Serratia marcescens typing. Over a period of 9 years (1982-91), 36 strains were isolated from clinical material obtained fiom 11 departments of the University Medical Centre in Ljubljana. The Grimont-Grimont biotyping method divided the strains tested into 11 biotype groups. The second method, plasmids fingerprinting, revealed 10 small plasmid forms (0.5 - 3.8 kb) in 6 non-pigmented strains isolated from blood cultures. The third method used, antibiotic susceptibility pattern recognition, noticed just 4 bacterial groups. The retrospective data survey of our isolates from blood cultures and from CSF cultures as compared with 36 typed strains, revealed an epidemic in the year 1982 at the Paediatric Division, Centre for Intensive Care, as the first epidemic with S. marcescens in Slovenia. For epidemiological purposes, biotyping is a useful method of investigation recommended for diagnostic clinical typing.
