Abstrakt     In a group of 67 patients with anemia the author correlated the serum ferritin concentration with bone marrow iron stores. This group encluded 39 patients with iron deficiency anemia, 20 patients with myelodysplastic syndromes and 8 patients with anemia of chronic inflammation. In all patients a semiquantitative estimation of bone marrow iron stores was performed and serum ferritin level determined. The usefulness of the serum ferritin assay for evaluating iron stores was analysed with attention to diseases that influence the level independently of body iron stores. The median serum ferritin level in 39 patients with iron deficiency anemia was 6 micro g/L. In 20 patients with myelodisplastic syndromes and in 8 patients with anemia of chronic inflammation the ferritin level was 500 micro g/L and 245 micro g/L respectively. A highly significant correlation was observed between the serum ferritin level and the stainable bone marrow iron. The difference was statistically significant between the serum ferritin levels of patients with all three forms of anemia.
