Abstrakt     Background: Grinding of enamel surface exposes the deeper and more reactive layers of enamel, thus increasing the possibility of demineralization and caries development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of two adhesive resin coatings in protecting the ground enamel surface from erosion and demineralization produced by acids. Methods: Enamel specimens prepared from human permanent incisors were exposed to demineralization and remineralization solutions in a cyclic manner. Demineralization was evaluated on intact, ground and adhesive resin-coated enamel surfaces using erosion depth and Knoop hardness measurements. Mean erosion depth (Le) and differences in enamel mineralization under erosions (OZd) were analyzed using ANOVA and the Scheffe test. Results: The deepest erosive and demineralized lesions were found on ground enamel specimens. No demineralization or erosion occurred on enamel specimens protected with PermaQuick adhesive resin. Partial degradation of the adhesive coating and minor demineralization and erosion of the underlying enamel was detected on two of five specimens protected with Heliobond adhesive resin. Conclusions: Ground enamel surface was less resistant to acid activity than intact enamel. Adhesive resin applied over ground enamel surface significantly hindered demineralization of the enamel underneath the coating.
