Abstrakt     Background: In patients wearing a removable orthodontic appliance, intraoral temperature could be used as the trigger for a sensor module (timer) built into the appliance to measure the length of time the appliance is in place. Aim: The aim of our study was to assess intraoral temperature in patients wearing a Frankel removable appliance. Subjects and methods: A temperature sensor (MAX 6576) was built into a Frankel appliance and connected with a wire to a microprocessor (Motorola MC68HC11) that recorded the measured values. Five boys and five girls aged 8 to 10 years participated in the study. The children wore the modified appliance 24 hours a day for a week. Every 12 hours, the temperature data recorded by the microprocessor were transferred to a computer and converted into degrees Celsium for subsequent statistical analysis. Results: The recorded temperatures ranged between 35.32 degreesC and 38.23 degreesC in children with competent lip seal, and between 30.25 and 36.18 degreesC in children with incompetent lip seal. Conclusion: The results of the study show that a temperature sensor built into a Frankel appliance could be used to measure the time the appliance is worn by the subject. The timer would be turned on at 33 degreesC and switched off at 38 degreesC.
