Abstrakt     Patients with a depressive disorder often have multiple complaints, with overlapping of physical and emotional symptoms. Remission is the main goal and the optimal outcome of acute episode treatment. It is defined by the reduction of symptom score on the depression scale, normalisation of functioning and improved quality of life. Partial remission brings about the risk of frequent relapses of the depressive episode, development of a chronic depressive disorder, shorter time between the episodes end longterm inability to function socially and to work. It presents with residual symptoms which are frequently somatic and complicate the diagnosis of depression as well as its treatment. Among the residual symptoms, unexplained painful syndrome is especially important However, with intensive treatment adequate dosage and cloice of medication, and additional psychotherapy, complete remission is more frequently achieved.
