Abstrakt     Aim. Apical periodontitis (AP) has been reported to be a widespread disease in many western populations. Its high prevalence is associated with root filled teeth, especially when the quality of the root filling is not optimal. Data about AP prevalence and the quality of the root fillings in Slovenian population are scarce. The purpose of the present study was to determine radiographically the prevalence of AP and the prevalence and the quality of the root fillings in an adult Slovenian population. Methodology. A total of 217 orthopantomograms of adult patients attending general practice for the first time were examined. The number of teeth, the number of root filled teeth and the number of teeth with AP were registered. On the root filled teeth, the quality of the root filling (homogenicity and length) and the type of the coronal restoration (plastic filling, crown, post and crown, no restoration) were recorded. t-test, x2-test and ANOVA were used for the statistical evaluation of the results. Results. Eighty per cent of the patients examined (aged 38,8, range 16-76) had at least one tooth with AP and 78 % had root filled teeth. The mean number of the remaining teeth, root filled teeth and the teeth with AP per subject was 26,3, 2,1, and 2,2, respectively. Of the 5710 teeth examined 7,8 % were root filled, while in 8,4 % of the teeth AP was found. In 45,1 % of the root filled teeth the filling ended within 2 mm from the radiographic apex, 50,0 % of the fillings were underfilled and 4,9 % were overfilled, and 46,7 % of the fillings were homogenous. Statistically significantly more AP was observed amongst root filled teeth as compared to non-root filled teeth (55,5 % vs. 4,2 %, p < 0,001). Adequately filled teeth showed significantly less AP than those inadequately filled (22,8 % vs. 68,7 %, p < 0,001). (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
