Abstrakt     Background. The estimation of the effect of plasmapheresis in the management of mixed cryoglobulinemia on the base of our experiences. Methods. Three patients with mixed cryoglobulinemia were treated with plasmapheresis and low doses of steroids. Plasmapheresis was performed twice weekly, for two or three weeks. We decided ro repeat plasmapheresis with regard to clinical manifestations and the level of circulating cryoglobulins. Plasmapheresis was performed with Haemonetics Model 30 and Progress BT - 790 Dideco. Replacement solutions consisted of 5 percent albumin of normal saline and on several occasions of fresh frozen plasma. Results. The treatment with plasmapheresis was successful in two patients. However, it was stopped because of side effects. In the third patient plasmapheresis did well managing the first attack of the disease, but later on the plasmapheresis was ineffective. Conclusions. The treatment of mixed cryoglobulinemia with plasmapheresis is justified in patients with progressive deterioration of the clinical conditions and in those patients who do not respond to drug therapy alone. It is therefore the possibility of the treatment, which is still inconclusive, including the injurious side effects.
