Abstrakt     Background: In our study we wished to evaluate periodontal treatment needs in a group of residents of Ljubljana who had been examined 10 and 20 years previously, and to determine what changes had taken place. Subjects and methods: The study group included 238 subjects aged 358 years. The Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN) was used for the evaluation. The results were compared with findings from the two previous examinations. Results: All subjects were in need of oral hygiene instruction, 98.3% required root planing and scaling, and as many as 471% needed periodontal surgery. Comparison with previous findings showed a marked increase in the prevalence and extent of advanced periodontal disease. As in the two previous examinations, men were more likely to require surgical treatment than women. Conclusion: Residents of Ljubljana aged 35-85 years have considerable periodontal treatment needs, which call for intense preventive and curative measures to be provided by dentists and dental hygienists.
