Abstrakt | Background: The condition of soft tissues in the oral cavity is a reflexion of the patient's general health status and local factors. Oral mucosal lesions due to local factors must be diagnosed and treated at an early stage. Effective prevention of these lesions is of great importance. The aim of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of reactive oral lesions among adult residents of Ljubljana, and to determine if the prevalence increases with age. Materials and methods: A total of 555 subjects in the age range 275 years (263 men and 292 women) were examined. Results: Fifteen types of oral mucosal lesions were observed in the study population., and six of them were due to local factors. The most common reactive lesions were denture stomatitls (4.3°/) and leukoplakia (3.1%), followed by morsicatio buccarum (2.7°/), frictional keratosis (2.2°/), mucocele (0.9°/) and smoker's palate (0.5%). The prevalence of reactive lesions increased with age. Tobacco-related lesions (leukoplakia and smoker's palate together) had a prevalence of 3.6% and were significantly mare common in men than in women (p<0.05). Denture stomatitis was insignificantly more prevalent in women. Conclusions: The results of our study underscore the importance of a holistic approach to the dental patient. Thorough examination of the oral cavity, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential. With progressive ageing of the population; clinicians are bound to encounter more oral mucosal lesions in the future. | |
