Abstrakt     Background: Depression is the most important predictor of suicide in old age. As elderly persons are less likely to use crisis programmes, depression needs to be recognised in general practise. Method: One hundred elderly outpatients were examined by a general practitioner who completed a 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale. Patients were also asked about suicidal ideation in the last six months. For the study population the best cut-off was 7/8 points, with high sensitivity (87.5%) and specificity (87.0%). Results: This study indicates that patients scoring 7 or less on the GDS would be very unlikely to have suicidal ideation. However, identification of patients at risk of suicide with a GDS score of 8 and over needs further assessment.
