Abstrakt     The effect of different levels of thyrotropinaemia and radiation on proliferative response of thyroid glands was studied in male Wistar rats. One group of 12 received thyroxine and a second group sterile water intraperitoneally for 14 days. The third group drank a perchlorate solution for 30 days. At this time, the thyroids of subgroups of three animals in each group were irradiated with either 0,1.5, 3 and 18 Gy. After thirty days all animals were given the perchlorate solution to drink for three months; after this time they were sacnficed. Stereological anal sis was performed on step serial sections of the thyroid glands. Absolute volumes o the glands, relative and absolute volumes of epithelium, colloid and interstitium were estimated and activation index was assessed. Analysis of variance showed significantly lower values of absolute volumes of the glands, as well as of the e ithelium in the thyroxine group, which could be due to a long acting suppressive e fect of this hormone. After irradiation with 18 Gy, all the values were low, but in the perchlorate group they were significantly higher than in the other two. This might indicate, in quantitative sense, a radioprotective role of goitrogen against high irradiation doses.
