Abstrakt     The aim of the research was to establish the influence of working conditions and types of retirement schemes upon the mortality rate of the still active and already retired males of Slovenske železnice (Slovene Railways). The data upon the mortality rate and health condition of railroad workers, which are routinely accessible in the Republic of Slovenia do not enable a direct connection of the former employees who died after retirement with the job position and the type of retirement scheme. Therefore we used the citizenship number (EMŠO) to connect the data base of the Slovenske železnice employees with the data base of the deceased in the Central Registry of the Zavod Republike Slovenije za statistiko (Republic of Slovenia Statistics Office) data base. The studied male population and its subgroups classified according to selected job positions were followed from 1986 till 1991. The most important results of the research are: The mortality rate of male railroad employees was lower than the mortality rate of the male population of the Republic of Slovenia on the whole (Standardized Mortality Rate (SMR) 0.8; p less th. 0.01). The mortality rate of the male railroad employees with permanent residence in the Republic of Slovenia was lower than that of the railroad employees with permanent residence outside of our state (SMR 0.5; p less th. 0.01). The mortality rate of male employees in direct traffic operations working in uninterrupted stand-by shifts at the most responsible and demanding positions was lower than that of the entire Slovene male population (SMR 0.5; p less th. 0.01) and than that of the employed male population (SMR 0.4; p less th. 0.01). The railroad employees had to take obligatory preventive medical check-ups every year. Retirement after the full working period of 40 years had no influence upon the mortality rate of the male railroad employees (SMR before the retirement 0.7; p less th. 0.01; SMR 1 to 5 years after the retirement 0.(trunc.)
