Abstrakt     Background. The aim of our retrospective study was to introduce the method for determination of lipid standardized vitamin E in serum. For this purpose we have determined serum vitamin E concentrations in the group of coronary patients treated at the Department of Cardiovascular Disease, University Medical Centre Ljubljana and in the control group. Vitamin E values were lipid standardized in several ways. We wanted to determine whether our coronary patients have lower levels of lipid standardized vitamin E compared to the control group, and to evaluate which kind of lipid standardization of vitamin E would give the greatest difference between the coronary patients and the controls. Methods. 541 patients were classified into coronary and the control group. In the coronary group there were patients with proven coronary heart disease. In all patients serum concentrations of total, HDL and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, apo B, apo A, Lp(a) and vitamin E were determined. Vitamin E values were lipid standardized in several ways. Results. We determined, that the best form of lipid standardization in our study was lipid standardization for total cholesterol and triglycerides. The coronary group proved to have 12.9 per cent lower values compared to the controls (p less th. 0.0018). Stepwise logistic regression also demonstrated that low levels of lipid standardized vitamin E was even more important than high total or LDL cholesterol.
