Abstrakt     Background. Non-A non-B hepatitis (NANBH) is now the most common form of hepatitis in haemodialysis units in patients and staff. The major causative agent of post-transfusion and sporadic NANBH is hepatitis C virus (HCV). Methods. Fifty-three patients from our haemodialysis unit were tested for antibodies against hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) using first-generation enzyme-linked immunoassay (EIA) and positive EIA results were confirmed by second-generation recombinant immunoblot. Results. Two of the 53 haemodialysis patients (3.8 per cent ) were anti-HCV positive, both with first and second-generation test. Both positive patients were male. The presence of anti-HCV was not associated with the duration of haemodialysis and with blood transfusions. None of the 16 staff members were positive for anti-HCV. Conclusions. The prevalence of anti-HCV in our haemodialysis unit was low. Our findings suggest that there are also modes of HCV transmission other than blood transfusions. Preventive measures to control infection in dialysis process should be considered. Our findings also suggest a low risk of professional exposure to HCV.
