Abstrakt		Background. The years since 1965 have been marked by spectacular but often under-recognized progress in management of the rheumatic diseases. In this period among other advances the important nonsteroidal antirheumatic drugs and immunomodulators were introduced. Development of total joint replacement and dissemination of knowledge of new syndroms and subsets of rheumatic diseases was observed. Conclusions. As yet the profoundly effective and specific therapy has not been delivered. However, knowledge gainedf rom clinical research and basic science discoveries give us more insight into the etiology and pathogenesis of rheumatic diseases and will help us to select the best teffective target therapy.
