Abstrakt | Continued ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is the method of choice in the treatment offinal renal failure. Elsewhere, it has been used since 1976, and in Slovenia since 1983. A soft, elastic catheter is introduced into the peritonea! cavity and two litres ofdialysis liquid are poured through it three to four times a day. Following the principles of osmosis, the metabolites and liquid are passing through the peritoneum from the blood into the dialysis liquid which is removed after six to eight hours and replaced with the fresh one. The treatment proceeds continually every day; therefore the consumption of liquid and food is less limited than in haemodialysis. Also, certain useful substances are passing through the peritoneum into the body, for example proteins and water soluble vitamines. For the control and adequate balancing of the patient's state, one to two monthly blood analysis is required. | |
