Abstrakt		The Scherlievo disease is an endemic syphilis which at first appeared at the Croatian coastal region around the year 1790 and affected very much the territory of Rijeka and Quarnero at the coast and the villages in the hinter land and the rural population living there. It spread towards Dubrovnik in the South, to Trieste in the North, came through (passed over) Istria to Carniola, Inner Carniola, the Slovene Karst and partly to Lower Carniola and Primorsko (the maritime province of Slovenia); but there are none reports about it in Styria and Carinthia. The vectors for the Treponema pallidum were most probably soldiers and merchants coming from Turkey. They brought it also to Croatia and Bosnia, while it was spread to the former Carniola by merchants ways. The Archives of Slovenia conserves (keeps) the original and not yet published collection of documents regarding the Scherlievo disease in Slovenia between 1810 - 1850. The data obtained from the primary sources, help us to reconstruct the events that had happened in Slovenia; all those gained from the remaining literature, suggest, with its analogy, the way to right conclusions. The Scherlievo disease affected mostly the rural area, inhabited by modest living peasants, where the national income, the degree of illiteracy and death of new born babies are very inconvenient factors. Children and young adults fell sick most frequently and due to its contagiousness the infect easily spread to other members of the family. Therefor we can speak of family type of disease. it is conditioned by bad economic, social and hygienic circumstances and low standard of living. According to the clinical picture it is not different from the sporadic syphilis although it was thought for a long time that there wasn't any primary affect and neither late changes on the cardiovascular and central nervous system.(trunc.)
