Abstrakt     Cardiovascular diseases (evo) are the great est public health problem in many populations. Oespite it is generally believed that men are at higher cardiovascular risk, evo represent at least the same magnitude of a problem in women. This is discussed by many recognized expert for more than a decade. Few different sources of epidemiologic data on the burden of evo in Slovenia were analyzed and compared. Results obtained show that in Slovenia the prevalence of evo in women is lower than in men. In general, the mortality due to evo in Slovene women is a bit higher than it is the ave rage in older EU member states (before May 2004). At the same time the prevalence of some of the behavioral risk factors (namely sweets and fat spreads consumption) is higher in women than in men, white for some others the prevalence in women is approaching the level prese nt in men (e.g. smoking). In spite of the epidemiological fact that evo are stili greater problem in men, we should be more aware of them also in women. Among the most important efforts in this field is the reduction of harmful behavioral risk factors.
