Abstrakt     Background: The work environment and the characteristics of the elderly care receivers with dementia affect the levels of staff stress and satisfaction in nursing homes. A high stress level among the employees is closely linked with the pronounced dementia signs and symptoms of the residents. One of the greatest problems identified is the residents' aggressive behaviour. A higher degree of fulfilment is, however, observed in the work with cognitively less challenged clients. Aim: The goal of the study was to identify the nursing staff perspective on those behaviours, and their overall job satisfaction. Methods: In October 2009, a survey questionnaire was conducted within a descriptive research study in order to obtain information on job strain and satisfaction. Staff attitudes and strain in handling the symptoms of dementia were measured using the Swedish Strain in Nursing Care Assessment Scale and satisfaction using the Swedish Satisfaction with Nursing Care and WorkAssessment Scale, translated into Slovene through the English versions. Results: The respondents' most prevalent perceptions of the dementia residents are that they are unpredictable, need someone close by all the time, they are kind/friendly and seem to behave in a completely aimless way. The attributes the care givers found most difficult to cope with and which cause a great deal of strain are the residents being aggressive, having little control over their difficult behaviour, when they are lonely, frightened/vulnerable and stubborn /resistive. Nevertheless, 80.6% of the employees are satisfied with theirjob and only 33% find no satisfaction in the work with institutionalizcd individuals with dementia.
