Abstrakt     Background. The article describes the functioning of the community health care in the district of Ljubljana. The objective of the study was to determine the number of community residents the district nurse is expected to attend, what profile of the nursing professional implements the community nursing care, whether this service is polyvalent in nature, what the time ratio is between the nursing care activities and the health education and to define the benefits of the nursing process in administering the health care. Methods. The data on the educational level and the level of expertise of the staff working in the community health care and on the number of individuals the community nurse is expected to attend were obtained through the interviews with the head nurses of individual units. Following the protocol of research observation, the work load of 18 senior registered nurses was measured during the period of one week, the nature of home visits was registered and the time for health educational and nursing intervention was recorded. The interviews provided also the information on the use of the nursing process in community health care. Results and conclusions. In all the units of the community health care the number of residents the nurse is to attend to is over 3000, which is already a critical normative. In all the units more time is spent on health education than was envisaged by the legislation. The nurses are familiar with the method of the nursing process but often implement only certain phases. In order to improve the quality of the health care, more information is still needed of the nursing care currently in practice by examining the practical problems. Increased efforts should be made to promote nursing research and the findings of the studies should be introduced into the community nursing practice.
