Abstrakt     Introduction: Ageing is not a uniform process, and the elderly are not a uniform group. The ways in wrnch individuals deal with old age and adapt to it can be very diverse. Successful ageing is associated with good overall health and the ability to adapt to changes occurring in old age. Methods: An overview ofbterature was used. We used the shared bibliographic-catalogue database (COBIB.SI) and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). Key words were supplied in Slovenian (older people, nursing care; older people, care; older people, nursing care, responsibility) and in English (older people, nursing, responsibility). Literature review: Increasingly, the elderly will have to be provided for not only by the society and individuals, but also by experts in ageing. In solving issues related to the population ageing, Slovenia could look to increase innovations and transfer good practice examples from other countries. In addition to greater knowledge, all generations should be made aware of the issue of ageing and its impact on the society. Health promotion programs for the elderly also have to be developed, and their social integration increased. In nursing, too, specific knowledge and skills in gerontology have to be developed by introducing obligatory and elective courses at all cycles of the Bologna study programs. Clinical specialization in gerontology should be introduced following rngher vocational education. Quabty gerontology nursing must be founded on evidence-based practice and personalized to patients' specific needs and characteristics. This kind of nursing calls for more than just specific knowledge and education for nurses; health care organizations must also show that they are tmly dedicated to this critical patient population.Discussion and conclusions: The issue of ageing population is increasingly becorning a part of nurses' everyday work.
