Abstrakt     Background. Patients from different departments of General Hospital Maribor, patients from haemodialysis centres in Slovenia, blood donors and pregnant women were tested for anti hepatitis C virus (HCV). In all anti HCV positive and suspect issues, the specificity of results was verified. Methods. The ELISA tests anti HCV Ortho of the 1st and 2nd generation were applied. Results were verified with the Chiron RIBA HCV test (Ortho) of the 1st and 2nd generation. Results. Out of 726 patients suffering from various diseases, by means of the ELISA test anti HCV of the 1st generation 44 (6.O6 per cent) patients were found to be anti HCV positive and 10 were (1.37 per cent) suspect. With RIBA 2. out of 44 anti HCV positive patients 41 (93.18 per cent) were also RIBA 2 positive and 3 (6.82 per cent) RIBA 2 negative. All 10 anti HCV suspect cases (1st generation) were RIBA 2 negative. In 983 patients with various diseases. 65 (6.61 per cent) were found to be anti HCV positive with the ELISA anti HCV test of the 2nd generation, and 9 (0.91 per cent) were suspect. Out of 65 anti HCV positive cases, with RIBA 2 58 (89.23 per cent) were still positive and 7 (10.77 per cent) negative. Out of 9 suspect cases. RIBA 2 determined 7 (77.77 per cent) negative and 2 (22.23 per cent) positve ones. Among 228 random blood donors. 3 (1.31 per cent) were anti HCV positive, the one who was suspect was RIBA 2 negative. All 17 pregnant women were anti HCV 2 negative. In 503 haemodialysis patients, 44 (8.74 per cent) were anti HCV 2 positive and 8 (1.59 per cent) were suspect. All 44 anti HCV 2 positive patients were also RIBA 2 positive (1OO per cent). One of 8 anti HCV 2 suspect cases (12.5 per cent) was RIBA 2 positive and 7 (87.5 per cent) were RIBA 2 negative. Conclusions. According to its manufacturiers, the ELISA anti HCV 2 test is more sensitive and more specific.(trunc.)
