Abstrakt     Background. Helicobacter pylori (HP) is a gram negative spiral bacterium doubtlessly playing an important etiopathogenetic role in the occurrence of chronic antrum gastritis, in gastric and duodenal ulcer. The detection of HP and knowledge of its sensitivity to numerous antibiotics and bismuthates offers the possibility of eradication of this bacterium, as well as the possibility of influencing the course of disease. In our article we wished to present the effect of colloid bismuth subcitrate (CBS) and Ranitidin on eradication of bacterium HP. Methods. In 55 patients, referred for routine gastroduodenoscopy because of suspected gastritis and peptic ulcer three methods were used to determine the presence of HP in biopsy specimens of the gastric antral mucosa: the microbiologic, the pathohistologic and the urease test. HP was considered present when the results of two out of three methods for the determination of HP were positive. The pnesence of HP was established in 453 patients (78.1 per cent). In spite of her previous consent one female patient from among these 43 HP positive cases no longer wished to take part in the study, therefore it was continued with 42 patients. In 42 patients with positive findings, the effect of Ranitidin and colloid bismuth subcitrate (CBS) on eradication of HP was studied. The patients were divided into two groups of 21 patients each. The first group received 2 x 1 tab. of 150 mg Ranitidin through 8 weeks, the second 2 x 1 tab. of 150 mg Ranitidin and 2 x 2 tabs. of 120 mg CBS through 4 weeks. After termination of therapy, the tests were repeated in both groups according to the same procedure. Results. The authors established that with CBS it was possible to attain eradication of bacterium HP, althoutgh the percentage is not very high. In the group of patients receiving only Ranitidin there was no case of HP eradication, in the group receiving Ranitidin and CBS there was HP eradication in 4 patients (19.04 per cent).
