Abstrakt     Background. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) was introduced as a gastroenterologic diagnostic method ten years ago. It combines the advantages of endoscopic investigation of the digestive tract with those of ultrasonic investigation. The method was introduced recently: we are using an Olympus EUM-20 endoscopic instrument with a 7.5 and 12 mHz ultrasonic probe respectively, making a 360 degrees investigation of surounding structures possible. The high resolution of the probe makes it possible to discover tissue changes sized 1-2 mm, but only up to a limited depth of 5 cm. Results and conclusions. With EUS it is possible to investigate the wall of a digestive organ in all its layers and to discern between external impressions and submucosal tumours. Indications forEUS are above all the determination of local tumour spread in the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas and biliary tract (TNM classification). Simultaneously, this method offers new data for the choice of adequate surgical or nonsurgical treatment of these tumours as well as for following of the success achieved.
