Abstrakt     Background: Thinning of the cornea can be provoked by different disorders, such as ectatic dystrophies, keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, keratoglobus, posterior keratoconus and corneal ectasia after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Keratoconus is the most common dystrophy of the cornea, affecting around one person in two thousands. Conclusions: Corneal collagen crosslinking is a relatively new treatment in which collagen fibres are chemically bonded, using UVA and riboflavin, to increase corneal tensile strength and decrease the progression of keratoconus. It may become an important treatment modality, but as with all new therapies, unanswered questions remain. Larger, prospective comparative studies establishing the safety and efficacy of this treatment are currently underway.
