Abstrakt     Background. The paper starts with the incidence of urinary incontinence in women (5-15 per cent), the data for Slovenia, based on the survey with 3,047 women included, show this incidence to be 13,6 per cent. Methods. The author describes investigations used in the diagnosis of urinary incontinence: patient's history, pelvic and urologic examinations (urethrocystoscopy and laboratory tests), tests for objectivization of urinary incontinence, urodynamic and neurophysiological investigations, X-ray and/or ultrasonographic examination. The emphasis is given to urodynamic investigations and to the criteria when these investigations should obligatorily be performed in the diagnosis of urinary incontinence. The efficient outcome of treatment depends on the type and degree of urinary incontinence, accompanying diseases and the method of treatment. Follows a detailed analysis of each of the above factor. For managing stress urinary incontinence conservative, with the emphasis on functional electrical stimulation (FES), and operative methods of treatment are described. Results. The author presents the results obtained hy vaginal operative treatment (his own modification of Kelly's operation) of urinary incontinence. Two years after the operation the treatment is still efficient in 92 per cent of patients. Follows the enumeration of the indications for retropubic Burch's operation at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Ljubljana, with the efficient outcome in 98 per cent of patients. When describing the methods of treatment of urge urinary incontinence, the emphasis is given to acute maximal functional electrical stimulation (AMFES), with the efficient outcome in 81 per cent of patients. The principle of treating mixed incontinence (stress and urge) with the combination of operative and conservative methods of treatment is also described. Conclusions.(trunc.)
