Abstrakt     As part of the TP-MIR and CRP-MIR projects, procedures were developed for detecting bacteria and bacterial associations in drinking water by means of molecular detection methods. Drinking water can be a source of numerous severe infections with pathogenic microorganisms2. Hence timely and proper detection of biological hazards is essential for providing support and protection to the warrior or civil population during hostilities, epidemics, disasters or terrorist acts. The established procedures were tested by identifying the source of unpleasant smell in bottled water. The concentration of the DNA and the structure of bacterial associations in plastic bottles were also compared. Plastic bottles filled with water were additionally exposed to various atmospheres for two months, which allowed the monitoring of the processes taking place in the bottles. Differences between the water in plastic bottles with unpleasant smell and without the smell, and between the water after incubation in different atmospheres had been established. Although no pathogenic bacteria were detected in drinking water, the processes developed are appropriate for both the detection of the natural population of microorganisms in water and the detection of dangerous pathogenic microorganisms that could not be detected by culturing only.
