Abstrakt     Backgraund. Unlinked anonymous HIV seroprevalence monitoring in sentinel populations provides accurate surveillance information, essential for planning, implementing and monitoring prevention and control. Methods. In 1993 first unlinked anonymous HIV seroprevalence surveys of pregnant women and STD patients were conducted in different geographic regions of Slovenia. Sera samples, sent for syphilis serology, were consecutively sampled in 13 laboratories. Sampling continued during the whole year except for pregnant women in the regions of Ljubljana and Celje, where sufficient numbers were obtained earlier. A millilitre of the residue of each eligible serum was placed in a fresh container and labelled only with sex and age group. Sera were frozen and stored at -20 degrees C and subsequently tested for anti HIV-1 and anti HIV-2 antibodies.
