Abstrakt     Self-medication is use of medicines and other products and methods to treat or alleviate health problems without doctor supervision. The manuscript presents adverse effects and poisoning due to self-medication that were managed by the Poison Control Centre in the Division of Internal Medicine of the University Medical Centre in Ljubljana. Self-medication with prescription drugs and non-prescription drugs may cause adverse drug effects particularly due to drug-drug interaction. Self-medication with medicinal plants and their extracts can also result in adverse effects and poisoning due to plants overdoses, incorrect use of plants, plants interactions with drugs and erroneous identification of the medical and poisonous plants. Self-medication with traditional preparations can be hazardous as well, since they might contain toxic substances. In conclusion, the use of self-medication can cause life-threatening complications and discourage patients from taking prescribed drugs. Excessive promotion, recommending and selling products for self-medication can lead to the abuse of vulnerable and desperate patients.
