Abstrakt | Background. The authors present topical epidemiological data on aids and HIV infection worldwide and in Slovenia. The latest data concerning the natural history of HIV infection, treatment, vaccine and transmission of the virus are reviewed. Problems in testing and discrimination of seropositive patients are also discussed. The Slovene AIDS Programme focusing on health education is also presented in brief. Conclusion. Important advances have been made in the treatment of HIV infection and aids, but a successful drug or vaccine should not be expected before the end of this century. In Slovenia, the main threat is expected to be the spreading of HIV infection among intravenous drug abusers. | |
