Abstrakt | In Jamaica, the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is quickly becoming a serious health threat. Two hundred eighty nine cases (289) have been reported from December 1982 through November 1991, over half of which presented in the last 23 months. Even so, this study shows that most Jamaicans have a very limited understanding of the disease. Of 250 participants in a verbal survey, 33 per cent replied that they did not know that the acronym "AIDS" referred to a disease, much less the specific type of disease. Yet, those surveyed had strong opinions as to how information should be diseminated, such as in clinics and schools and through the use of television, radio broadcasts, and newspapers. Strategies are suggested for effective education. | |
