Abstrakt | The prevalence of diabetes mellitus worldwide and in Slovenia is increasing rapidly. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by inadequate secretion of insulin or its deficient action or both, resulting in hyperglycaemia. High blood glucose (hyperglycaemia) is the main pathogenic factor for the development of diabetic complications, including coronary heart disease, retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy and impaired wound healing. Diabetes mellitus has amajor impact on oral health, mainly on periodontal tissues. Periodontal disease has been called the sixth complication of diabetes. Diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus and other chronic diseases is essential to minimize their impact on periodontal tissues and improve the outcome of periodontal treatment. There is a bidirectional relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus since periodontal treatment improves glycaemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus. | |
