Abstrakt     A child's perception of his orher own school ability begins to develop before the child has gained any school experience. Thisperception is closely related to further achievement-oriented behaviour. Forthis reason, it is so much more important to know which factors will affect the forming of children's perception of their own school ability. Information about these factors can me acquired by analysing factors of self evaluation derived from scales designed to measure a child's self perception. Research (see: Harter and Pike, 1984; Entwisle, Alexander, Pallas and Cadigan, 1987; etc.) has shown that in self evaluation younger children have diff culties differentiating various areas of activity and occurrence. A factor analysis of 134 firstyears has shown that the factor of school ability contained a verbal component, knowledge of time, a ball game and physical appearance. Surprisingly, it did not include ability in mathematics. Comparative studies would be interestinč since these kind of data probably depend on various environmental factors (e.g. going to a standard kindergarten on the one hand and going to a kindergarten where elements of altemative pedagogy are applied on the other). In my article I also discuss the consequences of a lack of differentiation between various abilities in the self evaluation of younger children.
