Abstrakt     This M.Sc. thesis describes the development and implementation of a system named UNAMED (Unified Access to Medical Bibliographic Databases). It is an aid to the inexperienced searcher (end-user) who wants to search different biomedical bibliographic databases. The system consists of a conceptual browser (CONBROW) and of a query generator (QUGEN). The conceptual browser provides an easy way of browsing through the set of biomedical concepts selected from different controlled vocabularies. It features a graphical semantic network representation of the concepts and their interrelations. The query generator generates queries for a corresponding database based on the concepts selected during the browsing phase. It incorporates several search strategies for query reformulation. The bibliographic databases are located on CD-ROM and are accessed over a local area network. The CD-ROM access details are hidden from the searcher and completely handled by the QUGEN module. A preliminary experimental evaluation of the UNAMED system was undertaken. A searcher was asked to search for a sample of biomedical concepts. The query reformulation strategies incorporated in the QUGEN module usually increased the number of retrieved documents compared to the initial query before reformulation. The searcher described the UNAMED system as user friendly, easy to use, intuitive and time saving.
