Abstrakt     Background: Bleeding on probing indicates the presence of an inflammation in the periodontium. According to existing data, smokers have less bleeding on probing compared to non-smokers. The aim of our study was to determine the influence of smoking on bleeding on probing of periodontal pockets of different depths. Subjects and methods: The study included 31 subjects, 16 non-smokers and 15 smokers, with an advanced form of periodontal disease, who did not have periodontal debridement therapy. We calculated the mean percentage of bleeding sites for smokers and nonsmokers and compared the groups. The measurement sites we re then divided into 3 groups according to probing depth: 1 to 3 mm, 4 to 6 mm, and 7 mm or more. We compared the percentage of bleeding sites between smokers and non-smokers for each of these groups. Results: The mean percentage of bleeding sites in nonsmokers (37.4%) was significantly higher compared to smokers (33.2%) (p=0.0042). The percentage of bleeding sites was significantly higher in non-smokers than in smokers regardless of probing depth: in periodontal pockets of 1 to 3 mm, it was 28.9% for non-smokers and 23.8% for smokers (p=0.001); in pockets of 4 to 6 mm, it was 54.5% for non-smokers and 48.0% for smokers (p=0.012); in pockets of 7 mm or deeper, it was 75.0% for non-smokers and 48.7% for smokers (p=0.0001). Conclusion: The study confirmed our hypothesis that the frequency of bleeding on probing is smaller in smokers compared to non-smokers regardless of probing depth.
