Abstrakt     The population of 874 subjects, male and female, was included into the study. We defined 464 subjects as hypertensive and 410 as normotensive without evident cardiovascular disease. All included suhjects were studied with clinical examination including body weight and height, measurements of blood pressure and heart rate. The 2 D guided M-mode echocardiogram of the left ventricle was performed in all investigated persons. The left ventricular mass was calculated using Pehn convention and formula recommended by Devereux and Reichek. It was normalised to body surface area and body height. To define the left ventricular hypertrophy the criteria of the Framingham study and own criteria obtained in this study on the same way in healthy 106 men and 165 women with body mass index under 28 kg/m2 were used. From the echocardiogram of the left ventricle the parameters of its systolic function are obtained. The standard electrocardiogram was recorded in hypertensive patients. The upper normal limit of left ventriculur mass is defined as the average plus 2 standard deviations for both men and women. For the studied population it is 137 g/m2 and 162 g/m in men, and 119 g/m2 and 137 g/m in women respectively. The presumed prevalence of hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy in the pupulation corresponding to the studied samples and using own criteria is 9 per cent with the normalisation of left ventricular mass to body surface area (8 per cent in men, and 10 per cent in women), and 13 per cent with the normalisation of left ventricular mass to body height (12 per cent in men, and 13 per cent in women). The higher prevalence is obtained using Framingham criteria. The prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertensive group is shown to be strongly dependent on the used criteria.(trunc.)
