Abstrakt     The aim of this study was the standardization of the tilt table test and the standard cardiovascular tests (i.e., Valsalva manoeuvre, deep breathing test, handgrip test, active orthostatic (standing up) test and spectral analysls of heart rate variability in supine and standing postures) in healthy volunteers. Results of the study should make possible testing of syncope patients and patients with autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Passive head-up tilt of the subject up to the angle of 60 degrees for 45 minutes was used. The tilt table had a restraining belt over the hips end footplate support. The parameters measured and recorded were ECG and arterial blood pressure. Basal heart rate and arterial systolic and diastolic blood pressures, absolute changes and rates of change of heart rate and arterial pressures for each 2minute interval, as well as absolute changes and rates of changes of heart rate for each 2O-second interval of the first 3 minutes of tilting were calculated. Cardiovascular tests of the function of the autonomic nervous system were performed in the same volunteers on another day. In 12 percent of subjects syncope or presyncopal symptoms were provoked efter a mean period of 27.0 q 10.0 minutes of tilt. With the exceptions of the Valsalva manoeuvre, deep breathing test and the amplitude spectrum in the upright posture In the frequency band 0.15 to 0.45 Hz, no statistically significant differences were found between the results of the cardiovascular reflex tests of subjects who did and those who did not develop syncope or presyncopal symptoms during tilt. Res ults of almost all cardiovascular tests depended on age of the subjects, as expected. The initial increase of heart rate during the first 20 seconds of the tilt table test was greater than during the same period of orthostetic test performed by ective standing. With increasing age of subjects, the initial heart rate increase decreased.
