Abstrakt     Spectroscopic methods of proton MR as well as the corresponding MR imaging techniques were used to characterize the pathological alterations of the periodontal soft tissue. The evolution of the periodontal tissue inflammation is generally accompanied by an increased size of the damaged tissue caused by the penetration of water, induced by the immunological response. It is the increased content of water in the extracellular fluid which is assumed to be the essential element of MR imaging. On a series of dogs for which besides the MR imaging the corresponding X-ray plain films, histological examination the MR spectroscopic measurements were performed. Proton relaxation times T, and TZ of the gingival tissue samples were measured. The relative differences in the relaxation times are conditioned with a process of the tissue water content increase in inflammed tissues. The statistical analysis shows that the differences in relaxation times between the noninflammed and inflammed tissues are statistically significant. The relaxation times were shortest in samples of noninflammed tissue and the longest in the samples of acute inflammed tissue. Additionally, we could prove that the relative increase of water content is largest for the samples of tissue, for which the corresponding tissue in the undamaged state contains the smallest amount of water in the extracellular fluid. In an additional study of the artificially induced inflammation process in the periodontal soft tissues of cats we could also prove that the relaxation rate is decreased for pathologically damaged tissues. This measurements performed in vivo, have proven the above results on dogs in vitro. Herewith, it can be expected that MR imaging will prove to be efficient in the study of pathological processes of periodontal tissues as well as the more important tissue response within the healing process.
