| Abstrakt | | The paper deals with the basic properties of glass ionomer cements: their biocompatibility, fluoride release, involvement in remineralization processes and compliance with the high aesthetic standrads applied to filling materials. Glass ionomer cements include a solid component consisting of a calcium-fluoro-alumino-silicate glass powder, and a liquid component made up of an aqueous solution of a copolymer of polyacrylic and itaconic acids with the addition of tartaric acid. In dental practice, glass ionomer cements are used as liners, failing materials, for cementations and as fissure sealants.
