Abstrakt		The width of keratinized gingiva and maintenance of periodontal health have an important role in the development of gingival recession. Widening of keratinized gingiva with free grafts obtained with a mucotome is a simple surgical procedure, causing little inconvenience to the patient. After integration in the recipient area, the graft undergoes considerable shrinkage, resulting in an average width reduction of 27 per cent (p less th. 0.001) during the first four weeks and another six per cent in the next four weks. Further measurements show no marked changes.
