Abstrakt | Female genital mutilation or female circumcision isfrequently performed worldwide. It is estimated by the WorldHealth Organisation that worldwide, 100140 million girls andwomen currently have to live with the consequences of femalegenital mutilation. The article argues that the tradition is one ofthe causes, while another four possible reasons for undergoingsuch cruel mutilation of young girls exist. Today, there exists aclassification of at least four different ways of such mutilationwhich has no health benefits, and it harms girls and women inmany ways. Long-term consequences like recurrent urinary tractinfections, dysmenorrhea, sexual problems, infertility and complicationsboth for the mother and infant at delivery are mentioned. Female genitalmutilation is a violation of the fundamentalhuman rights, as well as a savage breach of the integrity andpersonality. Conclusion: The European Academy of Paediatricsadvises its members to initiate appropriate counselling for parentsand female adolescents regarding the risk of female genitalmutilation and strongly condemns female genital mutilation andcouncils its members not to perform such procedures. | |
