Abstrakt     Pathological, stereological and astereological analysis of microinvasive carcinoma of the uterine cervix was undertaken to find out effectiveness of quantitative methods for classification of cases in stage IA and to separate them from the cases of stage IB. 139 patients that were diagnosed and treated for microinvasive carcinoma of the cervix in the Department of gynecology in Ljubljana in the period from 1971 to 1991 were studied. Women were followed up by questionnair and by Cancer Registry. Stereological analysis of 70 cases was made with projection microscope at the magnification of 43x and with Weibel's multipurpose test system. Nuclear parameters were measured with graphic tablet and microcomputer on pictures obtained with microscopic video camera and laser printer at the final magnification 600x. Objective estimation of the tumour volume was obtained by stereological measurements, whereas stereologically measured tumour surface and factor of deformity were used for unbiased estimation of the type of invasion and of other histological features of microinvasive carcinomas. High consistency between qualitative and quantitative parameters proved that most of our cases were correctly classified with microscopic estimation. Using stepwise linear discriminant analysis consistency of histological classification and separation of cases with 4 quantitative variables, factor of deformity, areal density, depth of invasion and surface spread of the tumour, was obtained in 90 percent of the cases. The discriminating power of the stereological variables enabled effective classific ation of cases that were between the two stages, so that morphometric and pathomorphologic prognostic parameters were considered in separation of cases by objective means.(trunc.)
