Abstrakt     Gastric acid is the secretory product of approximately one milliard parietal cells. Their secretory function is regulated by neurohumoral pathways ending by histamine H2-receptors, muscarinic M3-receptors, and gastrin receptors on the membrane of the parietal cell. The 24-hour pH-metry for objective gastric pH-value monitoring throughout the day, enables an indirect insight into the acid secretion profile and acid neutralization. Each single meal producing a partial neutralization of the gastric contents is followed by a fall in pH which is a result of stimulated acid secretion after food intake. However, the peak acidity value occurs as a result of the so called nocturnal acid secretion. Since acid plays an essential role in the development of the ulcer disease healing of ulcer can first of all be achieved by inhibition of the nocturnal acid secretion.
