Abstrakt     A short description is given of the factors in fluencing the occurrence of ulcer as the most important disease of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Special attention is focused on the presence of two microorganisms that have been associated with ulcer disease: the fungus Candida albicans and the bacterium Helicobacter pylori; the first as a saprophyte and the second as the causative agent in the development of ulcer. An interest arousing section is the report on the students' research work submitted for the Prešeren Award. On the base of simple measurements of the stored mucus levels in the superficial cells of the gastric mucosa, the author came to the conclusion that in addition to the harmful effect of Helicobacter pylori also the duodenogastric reflux exerts an independent and synergistic deleterious effect on the epithelium. In the opinion of the author, a controlled balanced treatment regimen should be attempted in the population infected by Helicobacter pylori which should take into account also the morphological aspect.
