Abstrakt		The introduction to the article evaluates defense mechanisms from two perspectives. On the one hand it throws light on the usefulness of the employment of defense mechanisms, while on the other hand, it deals with their nature and the subject's manner of confrontation with the threatening factors. Defense mechanisms are classified according to their complexity, success, trigger motives, and so forth. The article goes on to analyze a child's first encounter with the most primitive defenses (such as projection, introjection and denial), and also with some of the more complex ones, such as splitting and projective identification. Identification is established during the development of the objective stage, while it is also possible to observe introversion and transferance. This paper and analysis of defense mechanisms touches only some of thent, particularly those of fundamental significance for a child's further personality development.
