Abstrakt     The authors carried out a prospective, double-blind controlled trial, in which they administered to a group of 34 patients either 3 pulses of 1000 mg methylprednisolone or placebo in a drop infusion. After the pulses, there were substantial decreases in pain at rest and on movement, morning stitness, and articular index. In addition, improvement in the patients' overall state was demonstrated. After 2 weeks, the activity indicators increased again, although even at 8 weeks a significant difference remained compared to the initial values. Similar ecacy was not seen after placebo. The decrease (bordering on significance) in immunoglobuline IgG RF and the increase in C3 and C4 complement component levels and in T lymphocytes are consistent with an anti-intlammatory and immunosuppressive action persisting for several weeks. The authors confirmed the relative safety of this therapy but emphasize the need for recognizing one possible contraindication (diabetes mellitus) and suggest in-house administration of the therapy.
